INTEGRITY-178 tuMP Secure Virtualization Technology Garners Platinum Innovators Award

SANTA BARBARA, CA — October 21, 2025 — Green Hills Software announced today that the INTEGRITY®-178 tuMP™ Virtualization technology has been honored with a Platinum Innovators Award from Military + Aerospace Electronics. Whereas most virtualization solutions have frequent vulnerabilities reported every year, the innovative hybrid architecture of the INTEGRITY-178 tuMP Secure Virtualization technology separates the isolation and virtualization mechanisms so that any vulnerabilities are isolated in a user space partition. The virtualization software and virtual machines run in protected user space partitions while isolation of the virtual machines is provided by the INTEGRITY-178 tuMP hardened separation microkernel running in kernel space. This hybrid approach greatly reduces the attack surface of the trusted computing base (TCB) and prevents any vulnerability found in the virtualization code from being exploited for virtual machine escapes and hyperjacking, which could happen if the virtualization was running in kernel mode. INTEGRITY-178 tuMP Secure Virtualization is the only virtualization solution where all the software running in kernel mode has never had a reported vulnerability since it was first deployed in 2002.

The 2025 MAE Innovators Awards celebrate outstanding innovation in defense and aerospace for the engineering industry. Innovators Award winners were chosen by the qualified engineering judging panel chosen by the editorial staff at Military + Aerospace Electronics. Votes placed by the judging panel determine the award level of platinum, gold, or silver. Competing against dozens of other product submissions, INTEGRITY-178 tuMP Secure Virtualization technology was voted as demonstrating the highest level of innovation in receiving the Platinum award.

Secure Virtualization is a layered product option for the INTEGRITY-178 tuMP high assurance RTOS, which is designed for the highest levels of safety and security. INTEGRITY-178 is the only RTOS to have been certified against the objective in the NSA-defined Separation Kernel Protection Profile (SKPP), and that certification was to both "High Robustness" and Common Criteria EAL 6+. INTEGRITY-178 tuMP is the only RTOS that has been used in a certification to NSA's “Raise the Bar” set of security standards for cross domain systems (CDS), and it is capable of hosting multi-level security (MLS) applications. INTEGRITY-178 tuMP was the first operating system to be part of a successful multicore certification to DO-178C and AC 20-193/ CAST-32A objectives, and it was the first RTOS to be certified conformant to the current major revision of the FACE Technical Standard, edition 3.0. INTEGRITY-178 tuMP is the only RTOS with multicore interference mitigation for all shared resources, enabling the system integrator to meet AC 20-193/CAST-32A objectives to DAL A. Without mitigation, multicore interference is not just a safety risk but also a security risk that can be exploited as a source for covert timing channels.
