SANTA BARBARA, CA—June 15, 2005—Green Hills Software, Inc., the technology leader in operating systems and development tools for safe and secure systems, today announced that the Airbus A380 flew at the opening of this week’s Paris Air Show with the Green Hills Software INTEGRITY-178B operating system in its engine monitoring system. INTEGRITY-178B is also being used in the A380 navigation system.
The deployment of the INTEGRITY-178B operating system in multiple flight-critical systems on the A380 illustrates how avionics equipment manufacturers are taking advantage of commercial, off-the-shelf technology to reduce the time, cost and risk of safety-critical software development and certification—particularly in light of the increasing sophistication and complexity of modern avionics. The selection of INTEGRITY-178B for these systems solidifies its position as the most widely used commercial operating system for next-generation avionics applications.
The INTEGRITY-178B operating system has been adopted by the Digital System Sciences (DSS) group of Vibro-Meter for the vibration and health monitoring system for the Rolls Royce Trent 900 engines used on the A380. Vibro Meter opted for INTEGRITY-178B because it was more mature than other commercial operating systems. Vibro-Meter’s engine monitoring units with INTEGRITY-178B have already been certified to the FAA’s RTCA/DO-178B standard for flight-critical software. Northrop Grumman selected INTEGRITY-178B over an in-house developed operating system for its LTN 101E Global Navigation Air Data Inertial Reference Unit (GNADIRU) for the A380 and other Airbus aircraft. The LTN-101E integrates inertial and GPS measurements to provide highly accurate aircraft position information. The INTEGRITY-178B operating system has been designed into almost every major next-generation commercial and military aircraft, including the Boeing 787, Airbus A380, Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, F/A-22 Raptor, Eurofighter Typhoon, Airbus A400M military transport, Boeing X-45C Joint Unmanned Combat Air Systems and Sikorsky S-92 helicopter. INTEGRITY-178B is also being used in upgrades of the B-52, B-1B, C-17 and F-16.
The INTEGRITY-178B operating system was designed from the ground up to meet the most demanding safety and security requirements. INTEGRITY-178B complies with the aviation industry standard ARINC 653-1 application software interface and the Multiple Independent Levels of Security (MILS) security architecture. Because these standards allow software running at different safety and security levels to share a single computer, the use of INTEGRITY-178B can significantly reduce hardware and certification costs.
With INTEGRITY-178B, Green Hills Software is the only ISV that has designed, developed and certified an ARINC 653-1 operating system to the FAA’s most stringent standard for flight-critical avionics systems: RTCA/DO 178B Level A. Green Hills Software is also the only ISV with on-staff engineers experienced in DO-178B Level A certification. In addition, INTEGRITY-178B is now undergoing the most stringent security evaluation undertaken by any commercial operating system, to Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 6+ (EAL6+). On the seven-level EAL scale, no operating system has previously been certified beyond EAL5.
